Popes in the Holy Land

Pope Francis will be the fourth pope to come to the Holy Land in modern times when he visits from May 24 to 26, 2014. Tradition names Saint Peter as the first Pope and he was from the Holy Land.

Pope Paul VI visited the Holy Land from January 4 to 6, 1964. This was the first visit of a Pope outside Rome in modern times.

Pope John Paul II visited the Holy Land from March 20 to 26, 2000. This visit was part of the celebration of the Jubilee of the year 2000.

Pope Benedict XVI visited the Holy Land from May 8 to 15, 2009.
